Preston's Story, from Teacher Ms. Ruiz
One of my students was a very reluctant reader at the start of the year. He is a wonderful kid and always pays attention in class. I chose him for the Hero In Me program because he is a leader in class, but could use the one on one attention to assist him in improving his reading skills.
Mrs. Rita was his mentor and every time she would come to get him, his face would light up. Throughout the school year, you could see he was always excited for his time with Mrs Rita. She would make the learning interesting and connect it to students’ lives. He would always have a cool story to tell me about what she taught him that day. By the end of their time together, these two had built an inseparable bond. Not only did his reading improve, through her hands on lessons about sharks or the books she would make him about his favorite activity, football - but also Preston was able to experience a once in a lifetime relationship with an adult that he will remember for the rest of his life.
